Savoring the Win

This week we’re focusing on the eighth step in my ten-part series on how to set and accomplish any goal, and this week we come to a crucial but often overlooked piece: savoring the win.

You’d think that after upping your well-being, setting the “right” goals, making your petri dish effective and having the grit to go after your dreams, you’d naturally celebrate whenever you were successful, but that’s not always the case.

Make the Petri Dish Effective

We come now to our fourth week in my ten-week goal-setting success formula, and this week’s tip follows the first three: Up your well-being, set the “right” goals, and improve self-regulation. It is: Make the petri dish effective.

My clients are fond of hearing me say, “A goal is not a goal is not a goal.” What I mean is that all goals are not created equally, nor can you proceed forward with confidence and energy towards your dreams unless you’ve assessed the petri dish that you live and work in as far as supportive people, a positive environment, and even the unconscious prompts you receive aurally, visually and through your other senses.

Improve Your Willpower

This is week three in my ten-week series on how to set and accomplish goals that are important to you, and this week’s tip follows the first two steps which are to up your well-being and set the “right” goals. Now we turn to step three, which is: Improve Your Willpower.

Here’s the short and long of this tip: without willpower, there is no point in even setting any goals, because the ability to say “no” to yourself when you are tempted to stray from your path is the muscle of all goal accomplishment.

Setting the “Right” Goals

Last week I unveiled the first of ten weekly tips devoted to learning how to set and achieve any goal. I’ve studied the fields of motivation, happiness, success and resilience for the last two decades, and have put myself through a huge number of programs to test their effectiveness. Earlier this year, I released my latest book, “Creating Your Best Life,” which connected the science of goal-setting with the science of happiness for the first time.

GOT A GOAL? GET HAPPIER FIRST

Last week I was privileged to speak about Positive Psychology and its connection to goals at the International Coach Federation’s annual conference in Orlando, Florida. For the presentation, I refined my approach on how to set and accomplish goals, and this ten-step process is what I will write about here every week in the next ten weeks. With New Year’s Resolutions on the horizon, this is the perfect way to prepare for, set, and follow up on your goals in the coming year.
